The minutes drew on, long and evident. Grimwald sat holding his half filled glass of spirits. No doubt, there was a gathering before the king as he continued drinking. A panic stricken public, besides themselves with fear - and why not, the lie they had lived under all their lives constituted nothing less. Grimwald shook his head, his glass paused at his lips, his eyes staring coldly at the wall before him. Of course, they'd get some group of volunteers to investigate, a fool's errand no doubt.

With a swift motion of pure rage, the glass came upside down on the bar. It shattered spilling drink and blood from Grimwald's hand. He made no acknowledgment of the pain. Grimwald walked behind the bar and retrieved a ragged cloth bundle, and a small pack. "We're going to need some supplies..." he mumbled as he made his way out of the bar.

(Nicodemus check the OOC for answers to your questions )

Eyes flicked to her father as the men came forward to offer their services. Zella smiled as she heard Cornelius step forward and vow that he would go with her to protect her. She nodded to him to accept his offer, "I would be honored to have you accompany me, Cornelius."

She had known him her whole life, and hoped that her father would be more keen on letting her go on this journey now that a close friend was going with her. Standing tall she waited for another to speak up. It wasn't long before another spoke, a gang member, agreed to come along. Men spoke against him, but his speech convinced her he should go, "You are welcome to go, I accept your blade."

Another mane spoke up afterwards, causing her to smile, "Ah Neeko. A wonderful tracker who we have been so thankful for your food contributions to our family. I will be glad to have your bow with us during your travels."

As no one else spoke up she frowned, slightly disappointed in the few who were willing to accompany her. She turned to face the rest of the crowd, "These brave men are joining me to find us a new gem to recreate The Pale. You all have until tomorrow morning to make your decisions on if you would like to go, and then we will leave shortly after dawn."

Cornelius deferred from the king and bowed graciously to the young princess Zella.

You have my eternal gratitude my Lady. I have no doubt we shall be successful in this endeavor.

Her pronouncements puzzled him greatly for the old man could see no cause or reason to suspect that a new gem could be found. Even if it were possible, he could see no course that would restore its extraordinary apotropaism. Hubris and its environs were indeed home to warlocks, witches, and thaumaturgists but he knew of none that marshalled any but the most primitive magic. Such power belonged to a previous age. No matter, his purposes would be served by exploration irrespective of the reason.

Cornelius remembered that his still had his sword and belt in his hand and fumbled to buckle it about his waist. He nodded to the unkempt giant before him.

You are most well met Neeko; I commend me to you. I suspect we will have much need for you skills in the dark of the wilderness beyond our ancient border.

He turned to the callow underworld youth and extended an open hand in greeting.

He thought, here is a ruffian with promise! A young seed fallen far from the tree of righteousness. Perhaps he will be of great use, for in a land of darkness, those who walk in the dark will be favoured.

Well met young man; i commend me to you. And your name is?

"I...uh, my name is Thadar, sir."Who was this scholar, who actuallly looked him in the eye and treated him like another human being? "I used to run with the Slum Lions, but I feel I would be better off serving here. Actually, might I have done some of your errands before? A run to get a shipment of herbs past the guards, or something similar?"

As he said the name of his now ex-gang, however, he felt a chill run down his spine. Ezekiel. He slipped out of the room as soon as he heard me say...Oh my gods. "We need to get moving immediately. If we wait till dawn, our lives are in danger."

A royal guard had been standing nearby. He wasn't planning on going on the quest, but was just told to keep an eye on the group as long as they were in the castle. "Speak," he commandeed Thadar, "Now."

"I'm not important to the leadership of the gang at all. To them, I'm just one of fifty who might end up dead in a gutter one day. But none leave the gang alive. We aren't allowed to quit. We can't just leave. To those who do that, they just turn up dead one night. For ones like me though..." Thadar swallowed and paled. How could I have forgotten? Izaac's warning...Oh my Gods...

"If you have someone gathering supplies for us, tell them to meet us at a secure location. I can get us out of the castle unseen." He jumped up on top of the throne and pushed a stone in. A hidden passage opened. The guard was stunned.
"Wait, why do you have a secret passage into the throne room?"

Thadar looked at him. "Believe me, you're better off not knowing." He looked at his group. "C'mon. We're losing time."

The streets of Hubris were bustling with chatter of the group setting out to restore the Pale. The air was thick with an almost tangible sense of nervousness. A nervousness not shared by Grimwald, as he stood drinking from a flask in a dark alley. Grimwald rested his left arm casually on the long bundle of ragged cloth standing on end at his side. He was now wearing a larger pack then earlier and it was filled to capacity.

Closing his eyes for a moment, Grimwald started to nod off, the liquor in his flask taking effect. When he opened his eyes a few moments later, a small man dressed in servants clothes stood before him. He was sweating profusely, and looking about with darting eyes.

"Do you have the money?" he inquired.

Grimwald reached into his tunic and pulled out a small sack of coins. He handed it to the nervous fellow, who exchanged it for a crumpled up garment.

"I still don't understand why you are willing to part with such wealth, for an old soiled shirt of the princesses?"

Grimwald, responded by sloppily putting his fingers to his mouth, and whistling in an ear splitting shriek. In seconds a giant dog came barreling out of the back of the alleyway. He was a mottled grey and brown, with sharp upturned ears. A strong heritage of Dane in him for sure, but his exact breed was elusive.

Grimwald bent down and placed Zella's shirt infront of the dogs nose. He inhaled deeply and eagerly.

"I have no more time for you," snapped Grimwald, "my journey outside the Pale begins..."

Grimwald knew the Hubris was filled with lies and secrecy, and few could be trusted. He was confident an infiltrator was among the group setting out to restore the pale. It was Grimwald's plan to set out before the search party, and confront this traitor on his own terms. Gryphon, Grimwald's four legged companion would allow him to shadow the party for as long as he saw fit.

Neeko bowed to Cornelius and silently watched the exchange between him and the young thief. Neeko knew of this young man and had seen him from time to time, usually causing some sort of scuffle. He was surprised the young man volunteered for this journey. He truly hoped the young man was up for the challenge. He did seem to be ready for any sort of challenge. Neeko did not know him too well, but he knew the look of a troubled man all too well. He hoped for all their sakes that his inner demons would not surface.

Neeko moved forward to the Princess to gather more information and to see when they would be leaving when he heard Thadar claim they were all in danger and to go through the passageway. The hairs on the back on Neeko’s neck began to stand on end. They only did this when he sensed danger; he knew that danger was very near.

"These brave men are joining me to find us a new gem to recreate The Pale. You all have until tomorrow morning to make your decisions on if you would like to go, and then we will leave shortly after dawn." The princess said.

And with that the Court erupted into a hubbub of confusion and arguing. Some cheered the bravery of the Princess. Others jeered and shouted that calamity would befall Hubris if the ancient prohibition were broken. They feared that if any went out into the wild, then the wild would come into Hubris. Rivalries fractured through the fear and uncertainty, and in places scuffling broke out.

The king vaulted from his throne, his seething anger at his precocious daughter abated somewhat as he looked to the immediate problems. With simple gestures he ordered his guards to break up the scuffles and he moved among his factions to calm them.

In the confusion, the majority of the Court was distracted and Cornelius watched in amazement as Thadar the rogue opened the Kings escape tunnel!

How did he know of this?! The King's Escape is compromised!

The throne guard was stunned, and said "Wait, why do you have a secret passage into the throne room?"

Thadar looked at him. "Believe me, you're better off not knowing." He looked at his group. "C'mon. We're losing time."

Hold young Thadar, Cornelius said. We have no need for stealth here. Quite the opposite! Our journey into the wild should be ceremonial, fanfared. All must know that the king is doing something about the loss of The Pale. My Lady Zella is right. We should wait until the morning. Word of the expedition must be spread and our leaving must be public. Do you agree my Princess?

He turned to the throne guard and said, Garath isn't it? Garath, go and speak with the King's Marshall Belliog. Tell him, the Court Tunnel is compromised. It must be trapped immediately, and a new escape route devised'.

Garath the guard nodded and headed off to find the Marshall.

The tumult of the Court chamber seemed to have distracted the assembled courtiers attentions and Cornelius was sure that Thadar's actions had not attracted undue attention. As Neeko approached closer, the old man saw trepidation, perhaps even fear in the hunter's eyes. He placed his hand over the throne's recessed key-stone and glanced around the group at Princess Zella, Thadar the rogue, and Neeko the hunter.

    So, what shall we do?

Grimwald and Gryphon made their way out of the Hubris and into the surrounding wild. Grimwald made particular effort not to attract attention or draw notice from the towns guard. The guard having taken up all about the perimeter of the town.

In a few moments, Grimwald was moving through the wood beyond the Hubris, following along an overgrown yet distinct trail. It was a trail he had traveled before. Long ago, Grimwald was a trusted member of the inner assembly of Hubris, one of the most distinquished members of the High Guard. When he had learned the first secret of the Pale, the authority chose not to banish him, or execute him, but make use of him. Grimwald became a 'Blue Walker', and ran missions for the King and his aides.

Thadar took a deep breath to calm himself before he spoke again. "Cornelius, I, in part, agree with you. The people must see you all leave in public. You should wait until morning and depart then." He swung his legs over the edge, so his feet dangled over the throne. Just calm yourself Thadar, don't do anything foolish"But I must leave the city this way and meet up with you outside. Every second I am within the walls, I am in danger of being killed by any Lion that finds me. Are there any supplies or items I could gather from villagers outside the village?"

He felt eyes on him. He scanned from Zella to Neeko, but they, along with Cornelius, were just looking at him. He looked out over the crowd and locked eyes with one man. A man who was slowly making his way through the crowd, with one hand concealed in his coat. Oh gods, that was fast

His voice dropped immediately. "None of you turn around. There is a man coming toward us. He is not a guard, but he is armed. I don't recognize him." Calm down.....calm down.....just act normally.
    "Princess, please, I need orders."

Watching her father angrily leave she sighed softly to herself but remained calm. Cornelius, her good friend, took control of the area around them to ensure her father’s safety from the thief’s surprising knowledge of the King’s escape behind the throne, “Thank you Cornelius.”

She was glad that it was mentioned that their trip needed to be a big bang, “It is priority that the King is in control of this situation at all times.” Even if he didn’t seem too pleased of my announcement. “We must wait until morning in order to have all villagers know that something is being done to remedy the situation of The Pale, to protect The Hubris.”

Emerald eyes focused on the increasingly anxious thief as he said, “None of you turn around. There is a man coming toward us. He is not a guard, but he is armed. I don’t not recognize him.” Without moving her head she searched for the stranger that Thadar mentioned. He was less about midway through the room, weaving through the crowd with the ease of someone who is meant to fade into the crowd without too much notice. Though his face was concealed, his head facing down to avoid being recognized, he was heading straight towards them, “Princess, please, I need orders.”

Nodding she kept her eyes on the possible assassin, “Thadlar, leave quickly to the East. There is a hallway that will lead you to the kitchen, which has an exit into the gardens. Once in the gardens you can easily hide among the foliage as you head south towards the gate.” He paused slightly as guards absent mindly tried to push everyone out of the throne room, “I cannot have a guard escort you; however, I can have a guard meet you at the inn in one hour. He will be instructed to protect you until we leave tomorrow. Go.”

Her eyes remained on the man, and didn’t see if Thadar left. Turning to the others she took a deep breath, “Everyone else, we need to discuss our goals for this journey; however, I understand that we also need to get ready for our journey. I would appreciate some time to discuss this with my father before we make plans, so let us adjourn for an hour. In one hour, I want to meet in the library. Tell the guard I asked for you if you have any problems.”

Signaling a guard with a hidden wave she told him of the plan, and told them about the situation. The guard nodded, and hurried off to take care of the man, and a guard.
