From the cerebral, to the enchanting, and to the downright action-packed, here are five upcoming releases before the end of 2012 that will add excitement to your celebrations.
    The Bay

This is a sci-fi horror thriller directed by Barry Levinson and distributed by Lionsgate. It's about a seaside town that is suddenly brought to its knees by a plague that turns people into hosts for mind control parasites. It was first shown in the Toronto International Film Festival on September 13 and will premiere in theaters on November 2.

The Man with the Iron Fists

Directed by Wu Tang Clan member and filmmaker RZA, The Man with the Iron Fists is a martial arts film in a fantasy version of nineteenth century China, wherein The Blacksmith, played by RZA, channels an ancient energy and forges himself into a living weapon with iron fists to defend his village against a traitor and his ilk. It combines incredible fight choreography with brilliant art direction that features both the hard-hitting action and the beautiful costumes and sets. The ensemble cast includes Russell Crowe, Lucy Liu, Eli Roth, Cung Le, David Bautista, and many others. This adrenaline-inducing production will be shown in theaters on November 2.

    Rise of the Guardians

This is a computer-animated fantasy-adventure film by DreamWorks Animation based from William Joyce's The Guardians of Childhood series about Jack Frost, the spirit of winter, as a carefree teenager. Other characters include known imaginary characters that have been reimagined like Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, the Boogeyman, and so on. Voice actors include Jude Law, Alec Baldwin, Hugh Jackman, and Isla Fisher. Rise of the Guardians is set for international premiere on November 21.

    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The first installment of the prequel trilogy to the Lord of the Rings films, An Unexpected Journey is yet another Peter Jackson excursion into the world that J.R.R. Tolkien created. Set way before Lord of the Rings, this film stars Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, the older kinsman and predecessor of Frodo Baggins as the bearer of Sauron's dreaded One Ring. Sir Ian McKellen reprises his role as Gandalf, and Ian Holm is cast as the older version of Bilbo. Perhaps one of the most anticipated films of 2012, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will premiere on December 13, while its sequel The Desolation of Smaug will premiere on the same day next year. The final film of the trilogy, There and Back Again, will premiere on July 18, 2014.
